    Drive-by Inspirations

    By Kyle | November 20, 2006

I work for a construction company and I am the gofer guy. “Hey Kyle, go f’er this or go f’er that.” In the course of all my gof’ering I drive from jobsite to jobsite. As I am driving my eye will catch things that happen along the way. Sometimes it’s in traffic, sometimes it’s on the sidewalks. I’ve come to look for and enjoy seeing these inspirations. Friday it was on the sidewalk in front of James Monroe Elementary. I was going 25 mph through the school zone. I watched a Dad and his little five or six year old son standing on the sidewalk. The Dad was down in the catcher’s position looking his little boy in the eyes. His son had on a stocking cap with ear flaps. His little backpack was hanging from his shoulders, gloves dangling from the sleeves of his coat. He was visibly in need of some encouragement. The Dad had his hands on his son’s shoulders and he was speaking directly into his eyes. As I drove by the Dad turned his son around, pointed him toward the school doors, raised his voice, and started clapping like he was sending him into the last seconds of the national championship game. In the rear view mirror I saw the little boy running down the sidewalk, his little backpack flopping, the gloves swinging. He had been inspired.

Lord willing, I will inspire my little boy someday. I want to be the Dad in the catcher’s position, my hands on his shoulders, looking into his eyes. I’ll clap my hands and raise my voice. I want to inspire him to run hard after God.
