it’s official

The transition between autumn and winter is bittersweet. My heart loves the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and I don’t mind the snow, but letting go of autumn is like standing in the driveway and waving goodbye to family that lives far away. You know you’ll see them again, but the time together was so short. The weeks leading up to winter are only a few and they are a beautiful few. From the year I began driving I noticed the progression in these few weeks. It begins on a cold morning in October on your way to work and you nudge the temp dial into the red. Then after work you have to take it back into the blue because the cool morning turned into a warm afternoon. Then it happens…usually in a weekend in mid November…it becomes official. The temperature dial goes into the red to stay until sometime in late March or April.
Well this is the weekend. It happened to me today. After a wonderful, rare day of family time and reading I volunteered to dart out to Wal-Mart for flour tortillas. As I buckled my seat belt and shifted to third gear I officially entered into the winter mindset. The temp dial went to the deep red, most likely, for the winter
I’ve been trying to think of a way to make this spiritual, but I can’t. I guess I can just say thank you Lord for the winter season.

I’m still holding out for a break in the weather for Thanksgiving weekend. We usually try to kick-off winter with one last football outing before the Midwest gets unbearable.

Hey, son. Good words. Good thoughts. I sure understand the picture of short visits and saying goodbye to people you love. I can’t tell you why, but it always seems like a special passage when on a cold morning the warm air first blows from under the dash. Maybe it’s because I have had cars a few time with defective heaters and they are torture. thanks for the good visit this weekend. Keep writing. You have a gift.

My Brother… it has come. I am enjoying the time by the fire… it’s going now. I think was the first time I really enjoyed fall… a lot of the other years I simply dreaded it because it meant winter…. I want to enjoy each season…
just like life
Good thoughts!! So true.
