    thoughts from Hale, MI

    By Kyle | September 4, 2007

    Jesus’ voice on the water:

As I spend time with the Lord on the screened porch the sun rises over the East Londo lake. A quiet breeze blows south bringing a chill through my body. I pull on a sweatshirt. I sip from my mug of french pressed coffee.

Opening my favorite well broken in, black leather, copy of God’s Word I can’t help but turn to Psalm 19.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, the firmament shows his handiwork.”

I look up from my reading to take in the picture David paints in this passage. The sun’s path is cast toward me on the smooth surface of the lake. A lingering mist rises. From the south end of the lake I hear the low rumble of an outboard motor coming north. The boat comes into view. It is a flat-bottom fishing boat with three people on board. They are out to ply the cold waters of this northern lake, most likely for Pike. They find their spot on the far side of the lake and slow to a stop. After the motor is turned off I hear the voices that go with the three sillouets. I can hear a young boy talking to his father with eagerness. The father gives his son instruction on where to cast and at what speed to retrieve the lure. The third voice has the sound of a patient grandfather. I sit and listen to their conversation.

As I listen I realize the significance of what is going on. I am listening to a conversation that is almost two hundred yards from where I am. The lake is a natural amplifier. I can hear the boy and two men talking as if they were sitting on the porch swing beside me.

My mind goes to Jesus in a boat on a lake in Galilee. I wish I could be there, on the hill above the lake, watching him climb into the wooden boat, the slack of the half-lowered sails catching the wind with a pop, making the boat rock gently in it’s mooring. I wish I could be listening to Jesus’ voice carry off the water. Watching him walk to the back of the boat and take his seat facing me, listening to him tell stories. I believe someday that dream will come true.

P.S. How ’bout them wolverines? HAHAHAHA ;-)

Ahhhh. Very uplifting, Kyle. To think that the beauty around us is just a shadow of what we’ll experience one day, sitting at the feet of the master storyteller…
